When exploring career options, Chantel Cherney repeatedly said she would never be a nurse. Then after becoming one, she said she would never go back to school. Now she has done both and encourages others to “Never say never!” Cherney believes her nursing career chose her and admits it is also the best fit.
Since graduating in 2012, she has had the honor of helping patients and their families navigate some of life's most challenging moments in the ICU (intensive care unit), cath lab (cardiac catheterization lab) and operating room. Reflecting on Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit," Cherney believes the Lord’s closeness sometimes comes in the form of a nurse.
Cherney loves teaching students about disease processes in the Acute Care 1 and 2 courses. She understands why cardiovascular disease is such a daunting subject for students, but it's still her absolute favorite. Watching her students “get it” is a great feeling.
