Cassie Balzer brings a variety of writing talents and experience to Hesston College. While at Doane University, she earned the Marianne Clarke Writing Award in poetry (2008, 2009) along with multiple publications in the university’s literary magazine, “Xanadu.” She was also a staff writer for Doane University’s newspaper, “Doane Owl.” In 2012, Doane University named her an Alumni Master. Balzer has maintained a state teaching license for English language arts since 2009, and her teaching experience includes rural Nebraska and urban Kansas schools. In 2024, her play was selected as one of ten in Hesston College’s Pen to Paper to Performance play festival. Balzer owes her technical writing experience to being an enlisted member of the Nebraska Air National Guard (2002-24) where she later became an in-flight refueling instructor. She is a veteran of more than 200 flying combat missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. Through her varied talents and experiences in the language arts, Balzer strives to collaborate with students to see and develop their own talents and experiences in the language arts.
