Database Administrator

Hesston College seeks an experienced and service-focused professional to serve as our Database Administrator (DBA). This role reports to the director of information technology. The DBA is responsible for the performance, integrity, security and strategic evolution of the college’s SQL Server database environment supporting Jenzabar One, Moodle and related systems. This role combines hands-on database administration with institutional data leadership. The position ensures reliable operations today while guiding the transition to Jenzabar SaaS and modern reporting platforms (e.g. Cognos and/or Power BI). The role also develops institutional reporting and analytics capabilities that support academic, financial, enrollment and executive decision-making. This is a full-time, 12-month, on-site, benefits eligible position.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Oversee installation, upgrades and integration of software that interfaces with Jenzabar, such as Moodle and Element.
  • Manage database performance tuning, indexing strategies, patching, backups, recovery testing and disaster recovery planning.
  • Maintain data integrity and enforce role-based security controls in compliance with FERPA and institutional policies.
  • Provide technical leadership during the transition from self-hosted Jenzabar to vendor SaaS.
  • Coordinate and provide direction to outsourced technical resources as needed.
  • Support user requests for updated queries, forms, workflows, etc.
  • Support various reporting for partner, oversight, and regulatory needs.
  • Provide first level support for Linux servers.
  • Provide support for the ticketing system and inventory databases.
  • Develop and maintain SQL-based reports and data extracts supporting institutional operations.
  • Support and enhance Jenzabar reporting using InfoMaker.
  • Assist in regulatory and accreditation reporting (e.g., IPEDS, state reporting) by ensuring data accuracy and availability.
  • Evaluate and implement new software within the change management framework.
  • Maintain documentation and participate in on‑call rotations. Occasional evening/weekend maintenance.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in higher education and with Jenzabar and other SQL database systems is preferred.
  • Demonstrate a working understanding of Microsoft SQL databases, their maintenance and modification.
  • Experience developing operational and analytical reports.
  • Understanding of data security, privacy regulations and FERPA compliance.
  • Ability to learn Hesston College’s systems and their unique customizations.
  • Flexibility and creativity to find solutions to database integration requirements and to resolve issues with the assistance of paid support contracts.
  • Strengths in managing various stakeholder relationships across campus.
