A gift of Harold and Elva Mae (Evie) Dyck to the people of Kansas, Dyck Arboretum of the Plains began with a tree planting in October 1981 and a mission to foster an appreciation of the natural beauty of Kansas. Today the original 13-acre plot includes established gardens that feature native and adaptable trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses, a pond and gorgeous educational/meeting and event facilities. The 18 acres immediately south of the original grounds are under development as a prairie reconstruction. Each year the arboretum hosts the largest native plant sale in Kansas. The arboretum is supported through memberships, events, educational programs, tours and generous donors. Harold and Evie entrusted the arboretum’s management and care to Hesston College. Dyck Arboretum is located a block from campus at 177 W. Hickory Street in Hesston.
