Hesston College Centennial celebrants are invited to a special Heritage Auction for Hesston College as part of the Centennial weekend activities on Saturday, September 26, at 1:30 p.m. in Yost Center. Items up for auction include those of historical significance to the college or that tie to the institution through its many alumni and community relationships. Before the sale, auction items can be found online at www.hesston.edu/centennial or on sale bills on campus during the weekend. Items can also be viewed beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Yost Center.
A number of alumni and faculty artists have contributed samples of their works, including pottery, paintings, photographs, furniture, and sculptures. Contributors include Paul Friesen, Ed Schrock, Royce Yoder, Doug Miller, Phil Hershberger, Lynn Lais, Roger Hernley, Dennis Maust, and Lois Misegadis.
Some of the unique items to be auctioned include a cane used by Professor M.A. Yoder, made of imported material and given to Yoder by an international student; the last six Green Gables candlehouses of a limited edition run; a set (1975-1981) of Hesston Corporation’s National Finals Rodeo limited edition belt buckles; a Friendship Quilt from Academy Class of 1936 including faculty names; a cypress wood clock made and signed by former faculty member Freedley Schrock; and three-night stays in Breckenridge, Colorado, and Branson, Missouri.
Former food service directors Emil Yoder and Bob Nunemacher will sell and serve Hesston’s famous cinnamon rolls at the auction. Also available for purchase will be fresh popped kettle corn and coffee and other drinks provided by The Lincoln Perk at Hesston College.
Several special Centennial items will be sold through the Hesston College Bookstore on site, including the book A School on the Prairie, A Centennial History of Hesston College 1909-2009 ; the DVD “Glimpses of a School on the Prairie;” the Hesston College Centennial Cookbook ; “In the Fragrant and Velvety Air,” the Hesston College Centennial music CD; and Centennial “Living The Vision” pottery mugs by Steve and Jane (Kaufman) Fry.
The cookbook includes more than 900 recipes–favorites from Food Service and the Larks Nest as well as those submitted by many alumni, current students, former and current faculty and staff. Many of the recipes also include fun tidbits and memories of the Hesston College experience. The CD of Hesston College music through the years was compiled by Ken Rodgers, and includes a variety of songs, both in terms of style and decade.
All auction proceeds support the renovation of the central and west wings of Erb Hall dorm for students.
A number of displays will also be on site, including: a 1863 hand woven basket by Henry G. Brunk, a physical education display board by former athletic director Evan Oswald, a model of Hesston founder A.L. Hess’s home, a scale model Hesston College Aviation airplane built by Mel Wiggers, antique cars, and a 1909 International tractor.
