Andreía Dück (left) and Geverton Ost, international students from Brazil, perform the gaúcha dance during the 17th annual International Festival at Hesston College Thursday evening, February 12. The theme this year was “An International Valentine.”
Gaúcho clothing, worn by men, and gaúcha clothing, worn by women, reflect historical and cultural influences in Brazil and Argentina and are adapted to the reality of work in the countryside. The gaúcha dress worn by Dück is considered an honor dress and is used for special events, including dancing.
Program emcee So Young Choi from Gangneung, Korea, said, “All of us have people in our lives whom we love. It might be family or good friends or maybe there is even someone very special in our lives. This evening, we celebrate those special relationships.”
Students, faculty, staff, and other interested people enjoyed an international meal served by international students and Food Services staff. The program that followed featured a skit, several dances, a solo love song, five short love poems from Japan, and modeling of traditional clothing from various countries worn for weddings, holidays, and special events.
According to Dave Osborne, international student director, 47 international students from 13 countries are enrolled at Hesston College this spring semester.
