The Hesston College Alumni Association
invites Hesston College alumni and friends to attend several events
in Nebraska, Friday-Sunday, January 28-30, 2005.
The Hesston College men's and
women's basketball teams will compete against Southeast Community
College, 4771 W. Scott Rd, Beatrice, Neb., on Friday, January 28 at
6 and 8 p.m. The Larks will take on Union College, 3800 S. 48th St.,
Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, January 29 at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.
Join women's coach Joel Kauffman
(in his 18th season at Hesston College), new men's coach Tim Swartzendruber,
and men's team member Bobby Kempf (former University of Nebraska basketball
team member) for the games and post-game conversation.
Following the games Friday evening
at approximately 10 p.m., you are invited to a Hesston College Alumni
and Friends Pizza Party to visit with the players, coaches, and other
Hesston College representatives. Be sure to register for great Hesston
College prizes!
Valentinos of Beatrice, 701 Court
St., will host the event in their private banquet room. The cost of
the pizza buffet is $8 per person; kids 12 and under are $5. Price

The Hesston College men's basketball
team, along with Alumni and Church Relations Director Dallas Stutzman,
will assist in leading worship in the 10:45 a.m. service at First
Mennonite Church, 7300 Holdrege St., Lincoln, Neb., on Sunday, Jan.
30. Hesston College sociology faculty member and artist-in-residence
Tony Brown '69, and music faculty member Ken Rodgers as accompanist,
will provide special music.
Meanwhile, the Hesston College
women's basketball team will assist with the 10:30 a.m Sunday worship
service at Bellwood Mennonite Church, 520 B St., Milford, Neb.
That afternoon, Tony Brown, internationally-acclaimed
baritone soloist and artist-in-residence, will present "Music
of the American Experience," including African-American spirituals
in the feature event of the weekend at First Mennonite Church in Lincoln,
at 1:30 p.m. A free-will offering will be taken. Brown will be accompanied
by Hesston College music faculty member Ken Rodgers.
Brown is a promoter of peace and
goodwill around the world and across the U.S. He has recorded three
CDs. The first one is titled Spirituals with cover art by the renowned
African-American artist Jacob Lawrence. His second recording, titled
Embracing American Song, is a collection of folk songs, sacred songs,
and popular songs of the 19th century. His third recording, in collaboration
with the Spirituals Project Choir of Denver, is titled Toil and Triumph.
While Brown also sings a standard
classical repertoire, he has made a specialty of performing “music
of the American experience.” This includes art songs, Broadway
show tunes and ballads, folk songs, American songs, and spirituals.
