Preservation Hall Jazz Band gets its
name from its place. In the heart of the New Orleans' French Quarter is
Preservation Hall, one of the country's landmarks for jazz.
There Preservation Hall Jazz Band plays
nightly to standing-room-only crowds who come to the run-down wooden building
that served as a tavern during the War of 1812. They come to hear the
infectious New Orleans jazz that evolved 100 years ago and has been preserved
for contemporary audiences.
Kansas audiences will have the opportunity
to hear New Orleans jazz when Bethel College hosts Preservation Hall Jazz
Band for a concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5 in Memorial Hall on the
North Newton campus. The performance is part of the Hesston-Bethel Performing
Arts series. For tickets, call (620) 327-8158 or (316) 284-5281.
  The concert will include selections
picked by band members during the concert. Their repertoire includes "Tiger
Rag," "The Bucket's Got a Hole in It," "His Eye is on the Sparrow," "St.
Louis Blues," "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," and "When the Saints Go
Marching In."
Organized in 1952, the group is one
of three Preservation Hall bands, which have toured for more than 25 years
while maintaining a daily concert schedule at Preservation Hall. Last
month's tour included performances in seven states and Washington, D.C.
Other recent venues have been at Carnegie Hall, Boston's Symphony Hall
and Wolf Trap as well as in Thailand and Israel.
The band has produced a dozen recordings
since 1977, including "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," and "Because of You"
on the SONY label.
  Tickets for Preservation Hall Jazz
Band range from $11-14 with discounts available for students and senior
citizens.
Hesston-Bethel Performing Arts
Beginning its 20th season, this series
started in 1982 as Hesston Performing Arts with funding and planning provided
by Hesston College and the Hesston community. In 1998 HPA planners launched
a partnership with Bethel College, and the series name changed to Hesston-Bethel
Performing Arts. Both colleges host performances each year.
  The season's final performing group
is the Borromeo String Quartet and a concert set for 3 p.m., Sunday, April
14 in Memorial Hall at Bethel College, North Newton.
