College welcomes new faculty and staff for the 2008-09 school year

      Hesston College has announced the following roster of new faculty and staff for the fall semester of the 2008-09 school year. Fall semester classes began Monday, August 25.

Jeron Baker, Hesston, serves as men’s and women’s tennis coach at Hesston College. He also directs the intramural program. A 2003 Hesston College graduate, Baker earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Goshen (Ind.) College in 2005. He played tennis competitively in high school and college. More recently, Baker worked as an admissions counselor at Goshen College. Baker's appointment was announced in March 2008.

Jason Dietzel, Newton, Kan., has served as an aviation intern since June 2008. He received his associate degree in aviation at Hesston College in 2004 and is working on his bachelor’s degree in business management at Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kan.

Hanna Eastin, Newton, is artist-in-residence with the Art department, working with ceramics students and classes, and demonstrating ceramics at area high schools. Eastin’s undergraduate work was from Principia College, Elsah, Ill., with an honors bachelor’s degree in studio art. She did graduate work at Fort Hays (Kan.) State University in ceramics, and has worked with Paul Soldner and Peter Voulkos in Snowmass Village, Colo. In addition to having worked as a studio assistant to artist Conrad Snider in Newton, Hanna is co-owner of Cobalt Gallery in Newton.

Karen Sheriff LeVan, Newton, teaches English courses, both composition and literature. LeVan has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, with primary areas in 19th and 20th century American literature. Karen was the director and founder of the Honors College Writing Assistant Program and Writing Center at the University of Oklahoma, a lecturer and adjunct instructor at the University of Oklahoma in a number of courses, and the development director of Special Care, Inc. where she coordinated fundraising, research, and grant writing.

Sarah Masem, Newton, is a new clinical instructor for the Nursing program. A 2000 graduate of Hesston College, Masem has a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Tabor College. She is working on a master’s degree at Fort Hays State University. She works at Newton (Kan.) Medical Center in infection control.

Meghan Morford, Newton, is also a new clinical instructor for the Nursing program. A 2005 Hesston College graduate, Morford has a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Tabor College. She has enrolled in the master of science in nursing program at Phoenix University. She works as a pediatric emergency nurse at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

Christy Berkey Pickerill, Hesston, is a part-time employee serving as the assistant teacher in the Hesston College Preschool this fall. Previously, she has been a nanny and has worked in child care. Pickerill graduated from Hesston College in 2003, then from Tabor College in 2006 with a degree in mathematical sciences, as well as receiving secondary education certification in the same field. Her recent positions include teaching high school math in Wichita and in Goessel. Pickerill is working on her master’s degree in math education.

Luann Yutzy, North Newton, Kan., teaches the Formation Seminars in the Pastoral Ministries program. Yutzy has a master of arts degree in church leadership with a concentration in Christian spiritual formation from Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va. She was a Clinical Pastoral Education resident chaplain at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, and an intentional interim co-pastor at the Yoder (Kan.) Mennonite Church.

In the Music Department, three new adjunct faculty members have been added to teach private lessons. They are Robert McCurdy, Emporia, trumpet; Hannah Neufeld, Inman, voice; and Kristin Shaffer, Wichita, flute.

Waneta Goering, Moundridge, is the new administrative assistant in Kropf Center. She received a secretarial degree from Brown-Mackie School of Business. Her most recent position was as the administrative assistant and director of Human Resources at Memorial Home in Moundridge. From 1980-82, she served as secretary to the director of the Center for Bible Study at Hesston College.

Todd Lehman, Hesston, began serving this fall as campus pastor. Lehman graduated from Eastern Mennonite University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in culture, religion, and mission. He has also taken classes toward a master of divinity degree at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Ind. From October 2001 to July 2007, Lehman served as youth pastor jointly at First Mennonite Church and Trinity Mennonite Church, both in Hillsboro, Kan. Lehman’s appointment was announced in May 2008.

Mary Martin, Sedgwick, began September 15 as systems operator and Copy Center manager in the Information Technology (IT) department. She also manages the IT Help Desk for faculty and staff. Martin worked in the IT department from June 2004 to April 2007. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pittsburg (Kan.) State University.

Cindy Mason, Hesston, serves as an assistant to the director of the Anabaptist Vision and Discipleship Series. She has a bachelor’s degree in social work from Goshen College.

Phillip Schoeller, Halstead, began September 8 as systems administrator and PC technician in the Information Technology department. Schoeller has a background with computers, networks, and copiers. He also works in the Copy Center when needed.

Amber Wiens, Hillsboro, is working this fall as a part-time assistant athletic trainer. She graduated from Tabor College in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and physical education with an emphasis in strength and conditioning. Wiens has worked at Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital, Topeka, in the therapy department for two consecutive summers. She is working on prerequisite courses at Tabor College and plans to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy.

Emily Yoder serves as resident director of Erb Hall (women’s residence hall) and co-campus activities director. From Garden City, Mo., Yoder received her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Hannibal-LaGrange College, Hannibal, Mo., in December of 2007. Since then, she had been a substitute teacher. Yoder is a 2004 graduate of Hesston College.

In Food Service, Marlena Coburn, Hesston, Patti Friesen, Wichita, Kan., and Suzanne Nolt, Hesston, serve as full-time assistant cooks. Friesen also works in the Larks Nest snack shop.
