Megan Ballard, a member of the Class 2A state tournament girls basketball championship team at Berean Academy in Elbing, Kan., this past year, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball and study at Hesston College beginning this fall.
Ballard, a 5'10" center, finished the championship season with an average of 5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, along with a field goal percentage of 40 percent. The team finished with a record of 25 wins and 1 loss.
Ballard and two other teammates participated in the mid-March Hesston College all-star game pitting senior all-stars from the Mid-Central Activities Association (MCAA) against all-stars from the Heart of America (HOA) League.
Berean Academy’s girls basketball coach Kristin Wiebe said this about Ballard: “Megan is first and foremost a wonderful young lady with a positive attitude who always puts her team's best interest ahead of her own,” Wiebe said. “She was willing to contribute in whatever way was necessary to help her high school team get better, whether that was rebounding, defense, encouraging, or scoring. Megan's character will serve her well whether on the court, in the classroom or on the job!”
Dan Harrison, women’s basketball coach at Hesston College, says Ballard will be a valuable asset on his 2008-09 team. “What I love most about Megan is her willingness to do the really important things, like play defense and rebound,” he said. “She will help us on our inside game.”
Ballard is the daughter of Russ and Deanne Ballard, Whitewater.
The Hesston College women’s basketball team competes in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Located in south central Kansas, Hesston College is the two-year liberal arts college owned by Mennonite Church USA.
