College welcomes new faculty and staff

      Hesston College has announced the following roster of new faculty and staff for the fall semester of the 2004-05 school year. Students arrive during Opening Weekend Aug. 20-22. Classes for the fall semester begin Monday, August 23. Spring semester classes begin Tuesday, January 11, 2005.

Faculty -- full-time assignments
      Kenneth Blount, Hesston, Kan., is a new instructor of business. He holds a master's in business administration degree from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. Blount was a hospital administrator for many years. For the past two years, he served as a business and economics instructor at Blackhawk Technical College in Monroe, Wis.
      Dan Harrison, Hillsboro, Kan., is a new faculty member in teacher education. He will also teach psychology courses during the fall semester. Most recently, Harrison was boy's basketball coach and a high school counselor at Campus High School, Haysville, Kan. A 1979 graduate of Hesston College, he holds a bachelor's degree from Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kan., and a master's degree from Wichita (Kan.) State University. Harrison is also vice president of the Hesston College Alumni Advisory Council.
      Tim Swartzendruber, Hesston, Kan. is the new tennis and men's basketball coach. In addition, he will serve as auxiliary programs director. A Bethel College graduate, he holds a master's degree from Wichita State University.
      Megan Tyner, Hesston, Kan., is director of theatre. She will direct theatre performances, and instruct all theatre courses. Tyner will also serve as yearbook advisor. She holds a bachelor's in fine arts degree (theatre performance) from Wichita State University

Faculty -- part-time assignments
      Albena Akers, Newton, Kan., will teach private piano and class piano this school year. An accomplished pianist herself, she is a recent graduate of Bethel College. Akers continues to teach in Bethel's Music Academy.
      Mary Bradshaw, Newton, will teach College Writing I and English as a Second Language classes. She teaches ESL classes for Newton Public Schools, and has been involved in ESL teaching and administration in a Colorado school district and a California college. Bradshaw also taught developmental English at a Colorado community college. Her bachelor's degree in Intercultural Communications is from Bridgewater (Mass.) State College. She holds a master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Azusa (Calif.) Pacific University.
      Mary Creasser, Sedgwick, Kan., will provide clinical instruction for Nursing III and Nursing IV students during their critical care clinical lab rotations, as well as assist in the campus lab. A 1994 nursing graduate of Hesston College, Creasser is studying for her master's degree in nursing at Wichita State University.
      Shin-Hee Chin, McPherson, Kan., will teach one section of watercolor painting during the spring semester. An artist who has taught art classes for some time, she has exhibited her work broadly. Originally from Korea, she holds a master's in fine arts (MFA) degree from a university in Seoul, and an MFA from California State University at Long Beach.
      Ashley Claassen Enns, Whitewater, Kan., will teach the pediatric clinical lab experience during the spring semester. A 2001 nursing graduate of Hesston College, she received her bachelor's degree in nursing in 2003 from Wichita State University.
      Meanwhile, Daniel Taylor, a 2004 Hesston College graduate, and Brian Kroeker, a 2004 Tabor College graduate, serve as flight instructor interns. They completed requirements of the Hesston College aviation program last spring.

Staff -- full-time assignments (unless otherwise noted)
      Merle Christner, Hesston, Kan., began his three-quarter time position August 9. He serves as Copy Services Manager and in computer network support. Christner returns to the college 25 years after serving as print shop manager 1978-79. Since then, he has had extensive experience at several in-house, university, and commercial print shops. Most recently, he was computer network administrator for a printing company in Wichita.
Kendra King, Hesston, Kan., began as an admissions counselor in mid-June. A 2001 Hesston College graduate, she received a bachelor's degree in business this past spring from Goshen (Ind.) College. Originally from Hutchinson, Kan., King spent a year (2001-02) in voluntary service in Kingston, Jamaica, with Mennonite Central Committee's SALT program.
      Mary Martin, Sedgwick, Kan., began in mid-July as systems administrator for the college's Information Technology department. She holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Pittsburg (Kan.) State University.
      Andy Sharp, Hesston, Kan., began as an admissions counselor in mid-June. He will also serve as assistant baseball coach. Sharp graduated from Hesston College in 1999, and received his bachelor's degree in history in 2003 from Millersville (Pa.) State University. For the past three years, he also worked as a supervisor at UPS in East Petersburg, Pa.
      Chris Strong, Hubbard, Ore., is the new men's resident director for Kauffman Court. A 2001 Hesston College graduate, he holds a bachelor's degree in social work from Bluffton (Ohio) College. His wife Rebeca (Amstutz) is also a 2001 graduate of Hesston College.
      Melissa Unruh, began in mid-May as bookstore manager. She is a graduate of Hesston College (1990) and Bethel College (1996). Since 1990, Unruh had worked as director of office services and as a business systems analyst with Prairie View, Inc., of Newton.
