The 2001-02 Hesston-Bethel Performing
Arts series begins and ends in classical style. Mid season events
include a Christmas concert, Russian folk festival and New Orleans'
jazz. Performances are scheduled for Bethel College's Memorial Hall
in North Newton and Hesston College's Yost Center in Hesston.
Chanticleer, a Grammy-Award winning
vocal ensemble of men, will open the series with a 7:30 p.m. concert,
Tuesday, Oct. 2 in Bethel College's Memorial Hall in North Newton.
Called "one of the world's best" by the San Francisco Chronicle, Chanticleer
has developed a remarkable reputation for its interpretation of vocal
literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to new music.
The season's second concert will
feature Seattle baritones Julian Patrick and Keith Harris and Hesston
College's own Tony Brown with accompanist Lisa Bergman. Titled Three
Baritones and a Lady, the concert is scheduled for 3 p.m., Sunday,
Dec. 2 in Hesston College's Yost Center. The program will feature
solo, duet and trio renditions of a variety of Christmas classics
and new music.
Nikolai Massenkoff will lead the
Massenkoff Russian Folk Festival to Hesston College's Yost Center
stage at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15. The performance will include
selections by a balalaika ensemble and dances by a Russian folk ballet.
Preservation Hall Jazz Band will
play New Orleans' style jazz at a 7:30 p.m. concert, Tuesday, Feb.
2 in Bethel College's Memorial Hall in North Newton. New Orleans jazz
features a slightly slower tempo than most other jazz forms with a
clear melody that has improvisation at its heart.
Borromeo String Quartet will close
the 2001-02 season with a 3 p.m. concert on Sunday, April 14 in Bethel
College's Memorial Hall in North Newton. Top prize winners in international
competitions, Borromeo String Quartet "combines every 20th century
virtuoso ensemble virtue with an old-world sense of color, character
and style," wrote Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe.
