Hesston College to name baseball field in honor of Evan Oswald

May 23, 2001

Hesston College has announced plans to name its baseball field after Evan Oswald, an alumnus and former athletic director and coach, of Glendale, Ariz.
Originally from northeast Ohio, Oswald attended Hesston College in 1946-48 and graduated from Goshen (Ind.) College in '51. He earned a master's degree in physical education and coaching from the University of Illinois in '57. Oswald came back to teach at Hesston College from 1951-71. During his years of service at Hesston College he helped build the athletic/P.E. program.
He and his wife, Martha (Duerkson), married in 1952. Following their twenty years at Hesston College, they moved to the Navajo reservation in northern Arizona where they worked at Navajo Community College for 14 years. Martha and Evan then began work at Glencroft Retirement Community. Evan retired in 1995 and the two of them now volunteer in numerous activities. They live in Arizona.
Oswald Field will be named during Hesston College's annual Homecoming/Alumni Weekend celebration, Sept. 21-23.
