HSC200 Introduction to Careers in Health Sciences 1 hour
Provides exposure to many healthcare science careers as well as communication and technology skills necessary in the healthcare industry. Evaluates the concepts of human growth and development, interaction with patients and family members, and health, wellness and preventive care, and introduces the legal and ethical responsibilities of today’s healthcare provider. Initiates fundamental healthcare skills development including microbiology, basic life support and first aid. This course will provide students with a competitive edge to be a stronger candidate for entry into the healthcare global marketplace and/or the post-secondary institution of their choice to continue their education and training. Prerequisite: advisor approval.
HSC300 Seminar in Health Sciences 2 hours
Hybrid course in which students develop a cumulative project consisting of key concepts, theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, practical application and real-world decision making relative to program objectives and courses completed throughout the health science program. Students will integrate critical analysis with healthcare disciplines and synthesize ethical standards in decision making to achieve organizational goals. Students will discuss real-world scenarios and applications to the changing healthcare industry. The seminar project provides students an opportunity to demonstrate skills of leadership, management and systematic problem solving. The student will also reflect on learning acquired during this health science program and assess their own competencies to secure employment in the healthcare field. Prerequisites: HSC 200.
HSC400 Practicum in Health Sciences 3 hours
Students working in a healthcare setting off campus may receive up to three credit hours of academic credit within the major. The work must help to expand the student’s knowledge and familiarity with the health sciences. Approval for course credit must be obtained from the division chair before the beginning of the associated work.
